Steve Renneberg, owner of Arrowhead Outdoors in Ely, Minn., thinks the recent influx of record-contesting catches of big fish in the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness during the past few months is a simple snapshot in time.
“We’ve always seen a lot of big ones up here,” Renneberg said. “I think it’s just kind of the popularity of the catch-and-release record that’s going on right now.”

Minnesota DNR investigates employee’s social media post related to assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump
The DNR says it is investigating an agency employee’s personal social media post, allegedly about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13.
Around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, the DNR released a statement on Facebook condemning the employee’s alleged post.
“We are aware of a recent social media post on a personal account associated with one of our employees about the assassination attempt on former President Trump. The comment is reprehensible and inconsistent with the views and values of the Minnesota DNR,” the statement said.
Substantial changes in place for Minnesota’s Camp Ripley hunt this fall
Since 1954, 53,000-acre Camp Ripley has hosted weekend-long events for archery deer hunters in the fall, but this year hunters will have season-long access to the property.
“The installation is going to be open to the public for the entirety of the state’s archery season. So, it’ll really be increasing access for the public overall,” Camp Ripley Natural Resource Manager Jake Kitzmann said.
Instead of hosting more than 1,500 attendees in one or two weekends, only 150 hunters will be allowed to enter the grounds per day during the entire archery season.

Forest Service clarifies dog leash rule in Boundary Waters, lessening confusion on what’s allowed for hunters
On Wednesday, July 10, the U.S. Forest Service reiterated its rule regarding the enforcement of dogs on a 6-foot or shorter leash – except while actively hunting – in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
According to the agency’s July 10 press release, the rule has been in effect for national forests for years, but now it’ll be enforced in the BWCAW and Superior National Forest. Violators of the rule could be fined $50 or more.
