“Back tag bill” signed as electronic or ‘other’ acceptable licenses are approved for New York hunters
New York hunters will soon be able to travel afield without a back tag or a physical hunting license, if they choose.
That’s thanks to legislation passed by both houses of the state legislature this year and signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. Another bill of interest to hunters and shooters makes some amendments to the state’s General Business Law, regarding the dangers to safety and health and the creation of a public nuisance caused by the sale, manufacturing, distribution, importing, and marketing of firearms.

People who knew him will tell you he lived deer hunting.
Estes, who lived in Caledonia, N.Y. (Livingston County), was not only an avid deer hunter, but he was also an official scorer for the Boone and Crockett Club. But he was best known as the founder of the New York State Big Buck Club.

Unlawful black bear kill in New York leads to charge
Every spring, the state Department of Environmental Conservation cautions residents about the increased chances of encountering black bears as they emerge from their winter dens looking for food.
John Foley, of Cazenovia, N.Y., (Madison County), apparently didn’t get the memo. Foley was charged recently with illegally killing a nuisance bear on his property, and DEC officials say it’s a good example of what to do and what not to do when dealing with hungry spring bruins.

Name your child “Hunter” and it’s almost inevitable the kid will grow up to be a sportsman.
So it is with Hunter Beiler, of Rexville, N.Y., (Steuben County), who said he’s been involved in hunting most of his life, along with the rest of his family.
Thus it was only natural the entire close-knit family would take part in Beiler’s greatest hunting triumph to date – putting an arrow through a massive Pennsylvania bull elk in September 2023.

New York Department of Environmental Conservation working to reestablish cisco in Keuka Lake
If you’re a New York angler and you don’t know anything about cisco, you aren’t alone.
In some states, cisco, which are classified as salmonids, are an important game fish. But they aren’t a major target for most anglers in New York, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. They are, however, an important forage fish for other sport fish that New York anglers do pursue, and that’s why DEC plans to reestablish the species into the Finger Lakes, specifically Keuka Lake.

New York DEC guarding against Avian Influenza as pheasant farm, stocking rebound
Almost a year ago, New York’s popular pheasant propagation and stocking program, which annually provides more than 30,000 adult ringnecks for upland hunting enthusiasts statewide, was in jeopardy after a disease outbreak at the state’s lone game farm.

Beetles being used to help battle hemlock woolly adelgid in New York
It’s a tiny insect, only about 1.5 millimeters, or about 0.04 inches long.
But the impact of the hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive species native to Asia, on hemlock trees in New York and elsewhere has been devastating. The state Department of Environmental Conservation, in partnership with Cornell University’s NYS Hemlock Initiative and other agencies, is using nature to fight back against the voracious bug.
