Ohio Insider: Is the walleye worthy of being the official state fish?

As I write this column, an effort was underway at the Ohio Statehouse to recognize the walleye as the official state fish.
As I understand it, Ohio is one of only three states in the union that doesn’t yet have an officially named state fish. The other two are Indiana and Iowa.
My question is: Is it really necessary to deem the walleye the official Ohio fish or is some other species more worthy?

House bill names walleye the official state fish in Ohio

With little fanfare, the Ohio House of Representatives recently agreed to name the walleye as the official state fish.
House Bill 599, which passed the House 93-4, designates sander vitreus – commonly known as the walleye – as the official fish of the state of Ohio. State Reps. Sean Brennan, D-Parma, and D.J. Swearingen, R-Huron, introduced the bill.
“The walleye – sander vitreus – is the only choice to be Ohio’s official state fish,” argued Brennan in his testimony to the State and Local Government committee.

Ohio Insider: Passion for hunting, fishing burns bight in 17-year-old Logan Urban

Logan Urban is not like most kids his age, and that’s a good thing.
He’s 17 years old and just graduated from high school with a career in landscaping and charter fishing ahead of him. In the meantime, he’s hunting and fishing at every turn, the young man told me during an interview a couple of weeks ago.

Hit Caesar Creek Lake for saugeyes, crappies, and muskies in Ohio’s Warren, Clinton counties

Caesar Creek Lake in southwest Ohio offers a plethora of fish species for anglers and is a real gem of a lake in Warren and Clinton counties.
It encompasses about 2,830 acres at the normal summer pool level. Construction of the dam began in October 1971 and the gates were closed to start filling in January 1978. Caesar Creek is the deepest inland lake in Ohio with a depth of 115 feet near the dam. While under control of the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Ohio Division of Wildlife provides resource management of the fishery and wildlife area.

What can we learn from a buck’s antlers? Plenty, according to Nebraska research

Brian Peterson and a team of researchers at the University of Nebraska-Kearney have been studying white-tailed deer antlers for the past 15 years.
Peterson is the coordinator of the master of science biology program at the University of Nebraska-Kearney and he was a recent guest on the National Deer Association’s (NDA) Coffee and Deer podcast.
“It’s not just, ‘Wow, that buck scored 150,’ or whatever,” said Nick Pinizzotto, president and CEO of the NDA and a co-host of the Coffee and Deer podcast. “There’s a lot more that can be learned from antlers other than just its score.”

Ohio’s Middle Harbor project to benefit many fish and wildlife species, along with outdoor users

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife has started a project to restore wetland vegetation across 300 acres of Middle Harbor in East Harbor State Park. The project began in April with a completion date later this year.
The Middle Harbor wetland restoration project includes dredging a channel from the center of the harbor to the outlet on the north side of the area to allow management of water levels.

Interested in Ohio’s fall steelhead fishing? Here are some of the state’s best access points

If you’re a steelhead fisherman, it’s never too early to start thinking about the fall runs up the northeast Ohio tributaries of Lake Erie.
These lake-run rainbow trout make their temporary homes in a handful of northeast Ohio rivers in the fall and winter after spending the summer swimming around in the big lake. With that in mind, Ohio Outdoor News checked in with a couple of fisheries biologists from the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife to highlight popular steelhead access points on some of the steelhead rivers.
