Leesville Lake ‘firing on all cylinders’ right now in Carroll County, Ohio

Curt Wagner, fish management supervisor for the ODNR Division of Wildlife in northeast Ohio, says Leesville Lake is “really firing on all cylinders right now.”
And Leesville, it seems, is humming along like a V-8. Leesville, one of the eight lakes in the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD), is good for bluegills, crappies, bass, and catfish, and outstanding for muskies and saugeyes, according to Wagner.

Ohio Insider: Conducting an autopsy of the state’s 2024 spring turkey season

Now that the 2024 spring turkey season is in the books, I conducted my annual autopsy of the season with Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife game biologist Mark Wiley.
For the record, Ohio’s hunters in the South and Northeast zones bagged 15,535 birds, which nearly matches the 15,673 spring gobblers harvested in 2023. This spring’s turkey harvest also nearly matched what Wiley and his colleagues thought would happen before the season began.

Ohio’s Shreve Lake still a work in progress after emergency drawdown in 2014

Those who live near and historically fished Shreve Lake before it was drained have reason for hope for the future.
Shreve Lake, in Wayne County in northeast Ohio, was the victim of an emergency drawdown in 2014 due to a problem at the dam.
“We do these dam inspections every so often … and you notice things,” said Curt Wagner, fish management supervisor for the ODNR Division of Wildlife in Akron. “We noticed water was seeping on the downstream side outside of the outlet pipe. It was tunneling outside the drain pipe, taken earthen dam with it. Over time, that can create a catastrophic failure.”

Bass fishing has never been better at Alum Creek in Ohio’s Delaware County

Alum Creek Reservoir is one of the bigger – and better – public spots for fishing and boating in central Ohio.
And that’s no big secret since this 3,192-acre lake in Delaware County gets plenty of pressure, angling-wise and otherwise. The northern portion of this long, serpentine lake – north of the Cheshire Road bridge – is where anglers will want to focus their efforts.

Ohio Insider: Husband and wife continue tradition of opening their Hocking County property to kids’ fishing tournament

The things that Fred Lilly does for people in the outdoors comes from pure love of his fellow human being.
Lilly, 78, of Logan, Ohio, invites all manner of people young and old to his farm in Hocking County so they can experience hunting or fishing, sometimes for the first time. For example, more than 50 people over the years have harvested their first deer on Fred and his wife Jo Ellen’s property.

Meet Ed Crosby: Ohio Outdoor News’ 2024 Person of the Year

Ed Crosby spends most of his time behind the scenes making sure all of Ohio’s hunter education instructors have what he or she needs to do their job.
He doesn’t seek out the limelight, but instead toils in relative obscurity. Now, however, Ohio Outdoor News is recognizing a job well done on behalf of Crosby by naming him this year’s Person of the Year.
“I’ve never done it for the recognition, but for the betterment of the whole area,” he said of receiving the award.
