Outdoor Writers of Ohio, Division of Wildlife get word out on Ohio’s record fish program

In an eureka moment, the several decades-old Outdoor Writers of Ohio (OWO) stepped into the 21st century regarding its slightly less young Ohio Record Fish Program.
The Outdoor Writers of Ohio is the statewide nonprofit organization of professional journalists – mostly Ohioans – who specialize in the ever-widening scope of the outdoors. “OWO”– as it is known less formally – is the only such body that keeps the official record fish list for any state, including Ohio.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Can the freshwater drum get some respect?

When you consistently find yourself in last place as a popular sport fish, it’s a tough spot to be cheered by Lake Erie anglers. Even if you are a biological hero in your own right.
And for the freshwater drum – aka, sheepshead, Lake Erie silver bass, gray bass, “trash fish” – not many anglers request an encore presentation after reeling in just one fish. That includes if that last drum was Fish Ohio award-worthy.

Smart Lake Erie Watershed initiative providing important data from Ohio waters

Lake Erie water resource experts have an expanded tool to help them better manage and protect this invaluable asset.
Anglers and boaters, too, can tap into his electronic network of deployed sensory buoys. In real time, these 13 submersible devices – called “gateways” – cover some 6,500 square miles of Lake Erie. Among the vital data are dissolved oxygen levels, pH, wave height, and water temperature.

ATF attempts to explain the gun-selling business, but lengthy document could lead to more confusion

In a 466-page document, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recently set out to expand on – and attempt to clarify – just what is meant by engaging in the business of selling firearms.
In doing so, the agency likewise spells out in legalistic fashion how an individual may sell a single firearm or multiple firearms at such venues as flea markets, yard sales, via the Internet, or at popular gun-and-knife shows.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: From my first fish, a love affair with catching yellow perch has never faded

My very first fish was a yellow perch, and all I could do was admire it with a child’s awe.
The fish’s body was more gold than yellow or more yellow than gold, if you catch my drift. The fins along the sides and belly had this cream-orangish tint, while a series of black stripes ran down from the back, fading away before they managed to reach its ivory white belly.
Strange in a funny sort of way, that encounter along a channel of Ohio’s Chagrin River happened something on the order of 64 years ago. But I remember nearly every detail the way a hunter cannot forget his first-ever deer.

Ohios’ spring wild turkey kill dips a bit from ’23

After Ohio hunters enjoyed a 32% jump in the number of turkeys reported during the 2023 spring season over its 2022 counterpart, the results of the just-concluded 2024 turkey season shows a bit of throttling back from 2023.
For the 2024 season, hunters across Ohio checked 15,535 birds. That figure nearly matches the 15,673 birds tallied during the 2023 spring season, but is still ahead of the 2022 spring season harvest of 11,872 birds. The total statewide kill represents all turkeys checked from April 20 to May 26 for the 83-county South Zone and the five-county Northeast Zone.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: As age advances, the appreciation for a morning in the turkey woods becomes much more

Dang this drop-foot that snagged (again) some small tree branch hidden under a vernier of last fall’s fallen leaves.
A curse to be sure under any circumstances, much less on a morning set aside for turkey hunting. The last thing a gobbler needed was to hear an “oooff” and the subsequent thump of my collapsed body on the forest floor. Such is the lot in my life where age has overtaken the heart’s desires. Now when I walk a trail and make straight a path into a woods, I must rely on a hiking staff, sometimes two.

Ohio’s opening week of turkey hunting off to fast start

Ohio’s South Zone turkey hunters took advantage of good weather and an abundant crop of 2- and 3-year-old birds by connecting with 4,367 bearded gobblers and a small number of like-dressed hens. That figure is a generous up-tick from the 4,037 turkeys that were shot in this 83-county sector during the 2023 opening weekend.
For the first week of the season in the South Zone, the total harvest was 10,574.
