Registration open for women’s outdoor weekend planned for September in Ohio

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) is opening registration for the 10th annual Ohio Women’s Outdoor Adventure weekend. The three-day event is set to take place at Mohican State Park Lodge and Conference Center from Sept. 20-22.
This weekend is designed to introduce women to an array of outdoor skills, including boating, fishing, shooting sports, and nature programming.

Report turkey, grouse sightings this summer to help management in Ohio

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife is asking the public to report sightings of turkeys and ruffed grouse this summer to help round out the agency’s annual population surveys. Community scientists, which can be anyone in the public, are encouraged to submit observations on the agency’s Wildlife Reporting System webpage at wildohio.gov or on the HuntFish OH mobile app.

Lots of loading going into this year’s algae bloom on western Lake Erie

On June 27, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced its annual forecast for the expected Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Severity Index score for western Lake Erie this summer. The media event was held at Ohio State University’s F. T. Stone Laboratory biological field station, located on Gibraltar Island at Put-in-Bay.
And, the news is not so good for the annual bloom that plagues the Western Basin of Lake Erie.

Carroll County, Ohio, dam coming down to improve fish habitat, water quality

As part of Gov. Mike DeWine’s H2Ohio Rivers program, the Ohio DNR (ODNR) awarded a grant to Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District to remove a low-head dam in Carroll County that is impacting water quality and fish habitat.
The Riley Run dam, located along a tributary of Yellow Creek near the village of Salineville, is scheduled for removal in 2025.
