Steve Carney: Post-opener in Minnesota is time to target crappies

After a long wait this spring, crappies are now shallow and are cooperating with anglers. Cold and rainy weather in April finally gave way to higher water temperatures, and crappies have responded.
Here are some crappie-fishing tips as we approach mid-May, the best time of the year to score on shallow-water crappies.

Steve Carney: Reflecting on my favorite fishing opener in 1993

Looking back on 51 years of Minnesota fishing openers, I have one opener that stands out. The fishing opener of 1993 was one of the greatest days of my life.
Gary Sorenson, of Insurance Brokers of Minnesota, then-Outdoor News Publisher, Glenn Meyer, and I hatched an idea for the opener. Readers could send Outdoor News letters describing why they should tag along with yours truly on the opener.

Oh, the weather: Where will walleyes be on the Minnesota Opener?

Several weeks ago, it looked like lake conditions were ahead of normal following a lengthy warm spell. But the past two weeks have been miserable, weather-wise. Now it appears lake water temperatures are below normal and could make the May 11 Minnesota fishing opener a real challenge.

Steve Carney: Enjoy your geese the jerky way

I love cooking game birds as much as I do walleyes and crappies, and over the years I’ve tried cooking Canada geese in a variety of ways, from crockpots to stir-fry, but I just hadn’t found a way I liked to eat it until I began making jerky.
The past two seasons I have harvested a few geese and kept the breasts in a freezer, and now I think I’ve come up with two jerky recipes that work for me.

Steve Carney: For Missouri River’s spring walleyes, think small jigs

My first fishing trip to the Missouri River in central South Dakota was a successful one, with two days of magnificent weather. Highs both days were in the 70s, and there was no wind. I couldn’t ask for a better trip.
I spent the first three hours fishing deep-water spots that I’d fished last season, but initially struck out. The guests with whom I was fishing were giving me the “look,” and I didn’t blame them. It all changed later in the afternoon.

On river systems: Control your boat, catch fish

Anglers are taking advantage of the early spring-like weather, with many of them now fishing the variety of fish available in river systems in the Midwest. Some anglers tend to be wary of fishing river systems because of the current, which can be intimidating.
Here are some tips that should help you become more successful as the river-systems fish bite heats up.
