Count me among those who have procrastinated in taking what is soon to be a mandatory boating safety course for operators of motorized watercraft in New York.
In case you’re not familiar with what is known as Brianna’s Law, named after 11-year-old Brianna Lieneck, who was killed in a boating accident off the shore of Long Island in 2005, the law stipulates that anyone operating any motor boat (including those that utilize a trolling motor) be in possession of a boating safety certificate, which you can acquire after passing an 8-hour boating safety course.
