Michigan Natural Resources Commission approves deer regulation changes for 2024 and beyond

After months of meetings and work sessions, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission has approved deer regulation changes for 2024 and beyond.
The commission was considering numerous proposed changes to manage Michigan’s overpopulation of whitetails in the southern third of the state and a diminished number of deer in the northern haunts. At its meeting in Lansing last week, commissioners voted on multiple proposals from NRC commissioners, the DNR’s Wildlife Division staff, and from the Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula Deer Management Initiative groups.

Substantial changes in place for Minnesota’s Camp Ripley hunt this fall

Since 1954, 53,000-acre Camp Ripley has hosted weekend-long events for archery deer hunters in the fall, but this year hunters will have season-long access to the property.
“The installation is going to be open to the public for the entirety of the state’s archery season. So, it’ll really be increasing access for the public overall,” Camp Ripley Natural Resource Manager Jake Kitzmann said.
Instead of hosting more than 1,500 attendees in one or two weekends, only 150 hunters will be allowed to enter the grounds per day during the entire archery season.

Steve Pollick: Berry picking could help lead to your buck this fall

Picking the first batch of ripened black raspberries from the scattered wild patches in Froggy Bottom, as I did recently, is a reminder to get down my beloved recurve bow and start shooting.
Deer season will be upon us before we know it and for those of us who prefer more traditional archery tackle, it is time to loosen up those bow-drawing muscles and re-establish the muscle-memory so critical to good shooting. And the only way to do that is regular rounds of shooting.
Every year I wonder if it will be the last that I can ethically handle my 54-pound, 60-inch Kodiak Hunter on a deer stand.

Groups sue to restore endangered species protection for U.S. northern Rockies wolves

Six conservation groups have filed a lawsuit challenging a recent federal government decision not to protect wolves in the northern U.S. Rocky Mountain region under the Endangered Species Act, arguing that states are exercising too much leeway to keep the predators’ numbers to a minimum.
The groups sued the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the directors of those agencies July 2 in U.S. District Court in Missoula, Montana.

Plans released for Iowa’s 2024 Okoboji Blue Water Festival

Iowa’s Okoboji Blue Water Festival (OBWF) is less than a month away. This year’s 9th annual event is set for Saturday, Aug.10, at Preservation Plaza green space in Arnolds Park on the shores of West Lake Okoboji.
Co-chair and organizer Greg Drees shares the excitement that he and his co-chair Julie Peterson have for this all-day clean water celebration.
“It’s hard to believe that we are in our ninth year,” Drees said. “This year promises to be even bigger than ever. More and more people are coming to see what this OBWF is all about.”
