Have a high-energy hunting dog? Here are ways to give it the frequent motion it craves

There are plenty of sporting dog breeds that are known for their high energy levels. Some dogs just have a lot of horsepower, which is great when you’re after a limit of roosters. It’s not so fun when you’re at home, months out from hunting season. Providing the right outlets for exercise and problem solving can really mitigate the stress of owning a burner dog by making it much more tolerable on a daily basis. It takes work, but it’s worth it. Ask just about any sporting dog trainer what they commonly hear from prospective clients, and you’ll often hear about the disconnect between wanting a high-drive dog and owning one.
This is the reality of a lot of folks who buy German shorthairs, or pick up a well-bred American Lab pup (as well as plenty of other breeds). While it’s easy to think about the paint job when choosing a new dog, it’s what’s under the hood that will shape the course of your life together. If there’s a lot of extra horsepower, you’ll have to figure out how to manage it.
