Alewives washing up on North Shore of Lake Michigan ‘no comparison’ to 1967

Twas’ the great alewife invasion of 2024 … well, not really.
In June, many beaches along Lake Michigan’s North Shore saw an influx of dead alewives, lining the shoreline along with a smattering of dead cicadas. The die-off is not really a new thing – every year, as the temperature shifts from spring to summer, alewives endure a mass die-off. But park officials in Winnetka and Glencoe, Ill., noted an increase in beached alewives this year.
